66% of Australian businesses are sans website

I just found an article on SMH.com.au about businesses who can’t see the value in websites.

“Last week a friend told me that her new business partners don’t see the value in a website that goes beyond a simple display of the business’s contact details.

This friend and her partners are running a services business. They know they need a website, they just think that all they need online are their contact details.

66% of Australian businesses don’t have a website, according to this report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in June.” [Source]

It makes me sad to think these small business owners are missing out on a huge source of revenue that is so easy to implement. Not only that, the Internet is the ultimate level playing field – small businesses with small budgets can compete with big businesses and still succeed.

Even if customers can’t purchase anything through your website, your website needs to be active in your sales process. Sure – some products and services are not suitable for purchasing online, but that doesn’t mean that your website isn’t an incredibly important part of your sales team.

Who else can people talk to 24/7 about your business? People are searching on Google right now for what these small businesses are selling, and they’re being met with a website that is as passive as business card. Visitors expect more from business websites.

If you sell products or services that aren’t suitable for purchasing online, you MUST start thinking of your website as the start of a conversation with these potential customers. Make it your website’s goal to direct visitors to send an email enquiry, THEN you can sell to them.

Otherwise, they’ll find another website that does meet their needs within seconds.
