Right-o then
I thought it would be interesting to see where we’re at in Australia for female online entrepreneurs.
One of the websites I check daily is Smart Company run by Amanda Gome. I searched for “women entrepreneurs online”. Here’s a quote from the second article:
“Despite predictions for more than a decade that female entrepreneurship was on the rise, figures from ABS, SmartCompany and other sources reveal very little increase. Only 32% of business owners are female and many of those work part time in their spouse’s business. The number of female entrepreneurs in business awards and lists has remained static for decades.” [Link]
Right. So, this is not what I expected. In fact, it’s a bit depressing?? What’s this about? There are so many smart women creating and running businesses online, maybe they haven’t got a profile in Australia just yet? Maybe the media isn’t interested in these women yet?
Let’s see if I can find some info from the Australian Government. Browsing through the Australian Government’s Office of Women site I see lots of information about domestic violence and equality in the workplace. Both incredibly important issues don’t get me wrong – but where is the information and support for women starting up online businesses, especially when so many women are using the Internet to fulfill their creative and business interests, not to mention bring in an income to help/support their family and/or themselves?
I did find this…
“Women Entrepreneurs highlights the experiences of a remarkable group of women small business owners. The publication looks at some of the key challenges that women face in business, and more importantly shows how they have overcome adversity Women Entrepreneurs - PDF [5.4 mb]“
Unfortunately the link was broken.
I started this post thinking that I’d find mountains of inspiring information about women who’ve done it before us.
I guess there’s a couple of potential reasons for the lack of information – either we really are on the cusp of a female entrepreneur revolution online in Australia (in which case, wow what an exciting time for us) or the media/Government just haven’t caught up yet.
