The Girl Effect
You know when something just keeps jumping out at you?
I recently started reading Richard Branson’s Business Stripped Bare and in the intro there is a bit about a young woman who approached Richard in Africa, asking him for a loan to buy a sewing machine.
She needed $300.
She said to him that when he came back next year she would pay him back the $300. So he came back a year later and the woman had grown her business and employed some local women. They presented him with the money and apologies that she couldn’t do it herself, but she was at the local market selling her goods.
Today I found this website – www.thegirleffect.org. Check out the video from the site. Makes you think.
There’s plenty of scary statistics on the site but this just killed me “Without a birth certificate or an ID, a girl in the developing world doesn’t know and can’t prove her age, protect herself from child marriage, open a bank account, vote or eventually get a job. That makes it hard to save the world. “
